Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team (13-32) was shutout in a doubleheader by No. 6 California (44-14) 3-0 and 4-0 on Wednesday, April 24 at Cottrell Field.
In the first game, the Golden Bears took the early lead over the Gaels in the first inning off of an RBI double by Candace Harper. With one out in the inning, Harper's double to left center scored Kristen Morely from second. The Bears did not score again until the top of the fifth inning when they rallied for two runs on two hits from pitcher Jennifer Eaton (Palo Cedro, CA).
The Gaels managed only one hit off Bears pitcher Cassie Bobrow. Claudia Williams (Rodeo, CA) hit a single to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Veronica Nelson was perfect at the plate for the Bears as she went 2-for-2 with two walks, while Harper went 2-for-4.
Eaton falls to 5-16 on the season as she allowed three runs on six hits and four walks through five innings pitched.
The Gaels were unable to produce any runs in the second game as the Bears continued to dominate. Scoring one run in the second inning off of a double by Jessica Vernaglia, the Bears increased their lead in the third. Harper hit her second double of the day as the Bears combined for three hits and four runs the Bears in the inning.
While the Gaels were limited to only three hits, two hits came off of the bat of Claudia Williams. With two outs in the forth inning, she hit her first single of the game to center field and did the same in the sixth. Williams inproves to forth on the team with a .224 batting average. Jordann Bass (Sammamish, WA) earned her seventh hit of the season as she singled in the second inning.
Sara Wiedlin (San Jose, CA) pitched four innings for the Gaels, allowing four runs off of six hits. She falls to 2-7 on the season.
The Gaels will host Stanford in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 30. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
