Moraga, CA - The 2002 Saint Mary's football team took the field for the first time in 2002 on Monday morning, August 12. The Gaels opened camp with a morning agility workout before returning to the field for a two hour practice in the afternoon. Head coach Tim Landis will guide the Gaels for the third year and will look to continue the program's reputation as one of the top rushing teams in I-AA football. After finishing fourth overall in nation in rushing the past two seasons, look for Landis' Gaels to continue their push to the top of the rushing charts this year.
Saint Mary's enters the 2002 season with its most talented and deepest group of players in recent memory. This squad returns 17 starters from last year, including eight on offense, seven on defense and two special team's players. The Gaels will be led by 2001 I-AA Independent All-Stars in guard Nathan Frowsing, free safety Weston Borba and slot back Andre Coleman. Frowsing was named a preseason Honorable Mention All-American guard by the Sports Network. Borba was named the Preseason I-AA Independent Defensive Player of the Year by Lindy's magazine and was rated as a top-10 safety in I-AA football by the Sports Network. The Sports Network also recognized Coleman as one of the top-20 running backs in I-AA football.
The Gaels enter this season with one of the toughest schedules in recent history. In the I-AA Preseason Poll Saint Mary's received votes to be recognized as one of the top-50 I-AA football schools. The Gaels will open the season at #20 Montana State, on August 31 beginning at 1:00 PM, before turning home to battle local rival Sacramento State in the home opener on September 7 at 1:00 PM.
