STANFORD, Calif. — The Saint Mary's softball team put the cherry on top of an epic weekend of action, logging their third ranked win in four contests, defeating the 24th ranked Stanford Cardinal on their home field, 5-1, to finish out the Stanford Round Robin with three wins to just one loss. Of the three teams in the event, the 14th ranked Washington Huskies and 24th ranked Stanford Cardinal, it was the Gaels who walked away with the best record of the trio in their final non-conference weekend of the regular season.
It was a staff day for the Gaels pitching staff, as Sonja Garnett used three different Gaels in the circle to toss the one run gem. Mia Nishikawa got things started with three scoreless frames, facing the minimum. Freshman Madeline Haun worked a scoreless fourth frame, and was tagged for just one run after running into some trouble in the fifth. Odhi Vasquez came out of the pen and worked the final three frames scoreless to earn her 15th win of the season. Offensively, Hannah Ferguson logged a pair of hits and scored twice, while Camille Lara also touched home plate twice. Sam Buckley drove in two runs and Victoria Castillo drove in another in her two hit ballgame.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After being limited to just one run yesterday against the Cardinal (22-12), the Gaels (27-11) jumped on the Stanford pitching staff early in this one. Sam Buckley doubled Camille Lara home in the top of the first, and the Gaels would add on three more in the third on a bases loaded hit by pitch off the left arm of Buckley, an RBI single from Victoria Castillo and a sacrifice fly from Alex Cutonilli. Mia Nishikawa faced the minimum through three innings, surrendering two hits but subsequently rolling a pair of double plays. Braxton Brown drove in Hannah Ferguson with an RBI single in the fourth for a key insurance run, and Madeline Haun came out of the bullpen to work a scoreless bottom half of the fourth.
The Cardinal put together back-to-back hits to open the bottom of the fifth, chasing Haun from the game, as the Gaels called to ace Odhi Vasquez. The senior gave up a sac fly, allowing the Cardinal on the scoreboard, but then would strand the second inherited base runner at third. She would allow just one hit through the final two frames, logging her third victory of the week in yet another dazzling performance.
