MORAGA, Calif. (AP) - Freshman quarterback Trevor Johnston rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown on Saturday as St. Mary's beat Sacramento State 20-12.
It was the first victory over a Big Sky Conference team in five tries for St. Mary's coach Tim Landis, whose independent I-AA team snapped a four-game losing streak against its better-funded Northern California rival.
Despite 234 yards passing and two touchdowns from Ryan Leadingham, the Hornets (0-2) lost their 10th straight over two seasons. They closed to 17-12 on a 20-yard reception by Kenan Smith with 10:59 left.
But after an exchange of possessions, Johnston led the Gaels (1-1) on 53-yard drive capped by Ezequiel Arevalo's 18-yard field goal with 26 seconds left. Sacramento State didn't get beyond midfield on the final possession.
The Gaels took the lead for good with nine seconds left in the half when Johnston lateraled across the field to Nate Brown, who threw a 21-yard TD pass to Jeff Brown. A 21-yard keeper by Johnston midway through the third quarter made it 17-6.
St. Mary's outgained the Hornets 361-317, including 305-119 on the ground. Clint Wilson rushed for 89 yards, while Andre Coleman had 67 yards rushing.
