Moraga, CA - First year head football coach Vincent White officially announced the schedule for the 2003 season. Once again, Saint Mary's will play a 12 game schedule, with six home games and six road games. The one addition to next year's schedule will be an off week on September 20. The 2003 football schedule is arguably the toughest schedule put together at Saint Mary's since the return of football in 1968.
"The schedule for the 2003 season is very competitive," stated White. "Next season will be challenging and I look forward to what this schedule has to offer. Our opponents will give us the opportunity to get exposure on the East Coast, and I believe that the young men in our program are very excited to play against tough competition."
With the move of UC Davis to the I-AA level, beginning with the 2003 season, Saint Mary's will take on 10 Division I-AA opponents next season, the most in school history. The Gaels will play four games against teams from the Big Sky Conference in addition to Lehigh the Patriot League contender and a perennial top-25 power. Five traditional opponents remain on the schedule in Sacramento State, Humboldt State, Cal Poly, UC Davis, and Southern Utah.
White and his players will open next year's season on the road for the first two games against Big Sky Conference opponents Northern Arizona and Sacramento State on August 30 and September 6, respectively. Saint Mary's will return home for its 2003 home opener on September 13 against Division II opponent Humboldt State. After a week off, the Gaels will close the month of September on the road at Western Washington, which advanced to the 2002 Division II playoffs, on September 27.
October will open with a tough home against 2002 Big Sky Conference Champion Montana State on October 4. Two road games follow when the Gaels travel to perennial top-25 opponent Lehigh, on October 11 and then at Cal Poly on October 18. Back-to-back home contests will take SMC into the month of November when Southeastern Louisiana, a first-year I-AA program, comes to Moraga on October 25, and local rival UC Davis comes to Saint Mary's Stadium on November 1. After a road game at Drake University on November 8, Saint Mary's will close the schedule with two home games against Southern Utah and Weber State on November 15 and 22, respectively.
