Berkeley, CA Led by the pitching of sophomore Joe Todoroff and the hitting of James Holder, Chris Grossman, Allen Craig and Jeremy Burchett, No. 25 Cal (ESPN/USA Today Poll) defeated visiting Saint Mary's, 6-2, Tuesday at Evans Diamond. The Bears, who scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings, improved to 9-3 overall, while the Gaels fell to 2-6.
Todoroff (2-0) earned his second collegiate victory by pitching 5.0 innings with six hits, no runs, one walk and two strikeouts. At the plate, Holder and Grossman had three hits apiece, with Holder knocking in a RBI single in the sixth inning and Grossman hitting a two-out double in the eighth inning. Freshman shortstop Craig extended his hitting streak to all of Cal's 12 games this season and had a RBI walk in the fourth and a RBI single in the seventh inning. Freshman center fielder Burchett had a RBI single in the fifth and a RBI double in the eighth inning.
Sophomore left-hander Travis Talbott also threw well in relief for the Bears, pitching 1.7 innings with one hit (a solo home run to Saint Mary's Nick Conte), one run, no walks and two strikeouts. The losing pitcher for Saint Mary's was starter Eric Bowden (2.0 innings, two hits, one run, one walk, three strikeouts).
Freshman second baseman Gilbert Gil was 4-for-5 for the Gaels. Conte, besides his solo homer in the eighth, also had an RBI single in the sixth.
The Gaels will continue non-conference action when they play the Sacramento State Hornets on Friday, February 22. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM at Hornett Field.
