San Louis Obispo, CA -- Chalon Tietje of Cal Poly, who scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday, doubled to drive in two runs Sunday as the Mustangs completed a sweep of Saint Mary's with a 6-5 victory in Baggett Stadium. The baseball Mustangs improved to 4-2 with the win while Saint Mary's fell to 0-3.
Saint Mary's led 5-2 after snapping a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the sixth inning and adding one more in the eighth. But Cal Poly answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth and won the game with two more in the ninth.
Tietje and Bret Berglund hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the eighth. After Matt Powers (1-0) struck out the side in the top of the ninth, Sam Herbert was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Adam Leavitt singled to right, advancing Herbert to third. Leavitt then stole second base.
Billy Saul flied out to short center field for the first out, then Kyle Wilson was walked intentionally to load the bases. Tietje's double to right-center field on a 1-1 curveball drove in the tying and winning runs.
Wilson?s two-run single in the first inning gave Cal Poly a short-lived 2-0 lead. Saint Mary's responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Mike Sansoe and an RBI single by Gilbert Gil.
Saint Mary's snapped the deadlock in the sixth on Bryan Byrne's groundout and Nick Conte's sacrifice fly to center field. The Gaels added another run in the eighth on Conte's RBI single.
Herbert, Wilson, Tietje and Berglund each had two of Cal Poly's 10 hits. Sam Battle had a single and double for Saint Mary's.
The game was witnessed by 814 fans for a series total of 2,499, the second largest for a three-game series at Baggett Stadium. The Mustangs and Cal State Fullerton drew 2,880 for a three-game set May 4-6, 2001.
