Final Stats
Stockton, CA - On Friday, February 28 the Saint Mary's baseball team feel to the Pacific Tigers, 5-4, in game one of the scheduled three-game series. With the win the Tigers improve to 13-3 on the season, while the Gaels fall to 4-8.
Junior Matthew Pena picked up his fourth consecutive win (4-1) of the season as he allowed four runs on nine hits in 7.1 innings. Junior Sergio Silva collected his first save of the season as he induced an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the eighth and posted a perfect ninth to preserve the Tiger victory.
Offensively the Tigers got out in front early as they scored in the bottom of the first inning on a leadoff single from sophomore Adam Ringer and an RBI single from senior Cory Lake two outs later.
Pacific added to its lead in the third inning as the Tigers scored three times to take a 4-0 lead. Once again it was Ringer who got things started as he singled to left with one out. Senior Josh Snook then singled to left, putting runners at first and second. One-out later Lake was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The next batter, junior Aaron Harper, forced in the first run of the inning with a walk, then sophomore Jesse Kovacs laced a two-run single to center to give the Tigers their 4-0 lead.
The Gaels pulled within a run as Saint Mary's scored two in the fourth and one in the sixth, but Tiger senior James Stanford pushed Pacific's lead back to two at 5-3 with his second home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth. Stanford's home run came on a 1-0 pitch and just cleared the left field wall.
The Gaels will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, March 1 as the Tigers travel to Moraga for game two of the home-home series with Saint Mary's at 1:00 PM.
