Baseball Loses to Pepperdine, 6-1

Moraga, CA - Senior right hander Greg Ramirez pitched his second complete-game of the season and senior shortstop Kevin Estrada had a clutch bases-loaded single to help lead Pepperdine to a 6-1 victory over Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium and even the West Coast Conference (WCC) series at a game apiece.
The Waves improved to 13-11 overall and 3-1 in WCC play, while Saint Mary's had its three-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 11-13 on the season and 2-2 in conference action.
Pepperdine sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning and scored five runs to give Ramirez (2-2) all the support he would need. It was the second time in his last three starts that Ramirez has gone the distance.
The Waves' five-run uprising in the second inning began with two outs against Saint Mary's starter Matt Yourkin (1-5). Sophomore Jason Durbin started the rally by laying down a bunt down the third base line that he beat out for a base hit.
Sophomore Patrick Rooney followed with a single and sophomore Nelson Caraballo worked a walk to load the bases. Estrada then singled through the left side of the infield to plate two runners and give Pepperdine a 2-0 lead.
Freshman second baseman David Uribes made it 3-0 when singled into shallow right field to score Estrada from second base. Freshman Brandon Daguio was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases.
Senior Ty Harper then hit a ball in the hole between first and second that Saint Mary's first baseman Delaney Gallagher and tossed to Yourkin, who was covering first base on the play. However, Yourkin dropped the ball, allowing Estrada and Uribes to score and make it 5-0 Pepperdine.
Saint Mary's scored its lone run on a two-out RBI double by designated hitter Tim Spooner that scored Bryan Byrne in the eighth inning. Byrne finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate.
The two teams will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
