Malibu, CA - Jacob Barrack struck out a career-high 11 batters in seven innings and sophomore catcher Nelson Caraballo collected a career-high tying three hits to lead Pepperdine to a 6-3 victory over Saint Mary's Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The win gave the Waves the West Coast Conference (WCC) series, two games to one, and improved their overall record to 14-11 and 5-1 in WCC play. Saint Mary's dropped to 11-14 on the year and 2-3 in conference action.
Barrack, who improved to 3-1 on the year and lowered his ERA to 2.31, allowed just two hits, an unearned run, did not walk a batter and established a career-high in strikeouts. After allowing Saint Mary's center fielder Mike Sansoe to reach base on a wild pitch following a strike out, Barrack retired 16 of the final 20 batters he faced.
Pepperdine took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning when senior shortstop Kevin Estrada opened the inning with a single and scored on a double by freshman second baseman David Uribes. Following an infield ground out, Chris Kelly scored Uribes with a base hit.
The Waves added a run in the second inning and scored three times in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Carballo, who started the rally with a two-out base hit, scored the inning's first run on a wild pitch. Freshman designated hitter Michael Beattie and junior first baseman Chris Kelly had RBI singles to account for Pepperdine's final two runs.
Kevin Trochez (0-2) started for Saint Mary's and suffered the loss after pitching six nnings, allowing 12 hits, six runs, walking one and striking out three.
The Gaels rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the ninth of Waves' closer Kea Kometani as left fielder Sam Battle doubled to left-center field to drive in a pair of runs.
The Gaels will continue West Coast Conference action on Friday, March 28 when they host the Gonzaga Bulldogs. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM on Louis Guisto Field.
