Davis, CA - Delaney Gallagher had three hits on the afternoon, including a two-run double in the top of the eighth that broke open a close game, as Saint Mary's defeated UC Davis, 4-0, in a non-conference baseball game in front of 135 Tuesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium. With the loss the Aggies fall to 10-6 on the season while the Gaels improve to 7-8.
Saint Mary's got on the board first in the top of the fourth when Gallagher drilled a two-out double to deep left-center. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a balk by Aggie starter Andy Kloos. Kloos went five innings, surrendering one run while scattering five hits and striking out four.
The Aggies had something going in the bottom of the sixth when Robby Tulk earned a one-out walk and Ryan Coultas advanced him to second with a single to left. With two on and one out, Matt Kamigawachi was caught looking at strike three and then Ross Warner lined out to left, ending the inning.
In the seventh, UC Davis loaded the bases with one out following back-to-back singles by Dustin Soderman and Lukas Kirby and an intentional walk to Tyler LaTorre. The next batter, Yaw Yiadom, hit into an inning-ending double play, erasing the Aggie threat.
In the top of the eighth, consecutive walks and a single off Kamigawachi's glove loaded the bases with one out. Jack Boyl came on for Peter Soskin and worked the count full before Gallagher hit a two-run double down the right field line which Soderman misplayed, allowing Nick Conte to score from first base. Boyl would get the next two hitters, but the damage was done as Saint Mary's pushed three runs across, extending its lead to 4-0.
Jeremy Gonzales started for Saint Mary's and went seven strong innings, allowing five hits, all singles, while striking out four in picking up his first win of the year. In the eighth, Gabe Palma relieved Gonzales and he went two scoreless innings, allowing just one single while facing the minimum six batters.
Gallagher finished his afternoon with three hits, two doubles, to lead the Gaels' eight-hit attack. Conte added a pair of hits, including his fourth double of the year.
