Moraga, CA - On Wednesday, May 14, the Saint Mary's baseball team was defeated by the No. 2 Rice Owls, 10-6, on Louis Guisto Field. With the win Rice improves to 44-8 on the season, while the Gaels fall to 18-34-1.
Rice began the game with four runs on five hits in the first inning. Dane Bubela began the rally with a double, while Vincent Sinisi, Craig Stansberry and Paul Janish all recorded RBI-singles.
The Gaels retaliated with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning on four hits. Gilbert Gil led off the inning with a double and later scored on a Delaney Gallagher fielder's choice. Preston Young, Adam Thompson and Jeff Cunningham all tallied RBI. Cunningham recorded his fourth double of the season en route to the Gaels' third run of the inning.
Rice took the 5-4 lead in the top of the third inning on a Janish double. Janish's double scored Enrique Cruz, who reached earlier on his 16th double of the season.
In the top of the fifth inning the Owls increased their lead to 6-4 on a leadoff home run by right fielder Austin Davis, his fifth of the season.
After an RBI single for Bubela in the seventh inning, the Owls increased their lead to 9-4 in the seventh inning. Cruz blasted his eighth home run of the season over left-center field, a two-run shot for Rice.
Rice's Jeff Blackinton scored in the eighth inning on a Bubela triple to give the Owls a 10-4 lead after eight innings of play.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Adam Bellows hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season, a solo shot, to right-center field to cut Rice's lead to 10-5. A Tim Spooner single would add to the Gaels' score as he scored Gil.
Rice reliever Colin Methany (3-1) earned his third victory of the season after allowing no runs on two hits in 6.2 innings pitched. Losing pitcher for the Gaels, starter Gabe Palma, allowed nine runs on 13 hits to fall to 1-4 on the season. Palma recorded four strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched.
Leading the way offensively for the Gaels was Gil, who finished 3-for-5 at the plate. Cunningham and Thompson also tallied two hits for the Gaels.
The Gaels will finish West Coast Conference action when they play at the Santa Clara Broncos for a three-game series. Game one of the series will be on Friday, May 16 at Buck Shaw Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
