
13-Run Sixth Inning Propels Nevada Past Baseball, 16-5

Reno, NV - The University of Nevada scored 13 runs on 12 hits in the sixth inning and went on to down Saint Mary's College 16-5 in a non-conference game at Peccole Park on Tuesday afternoon. With the victory the Wolf Pack have won a season high five games in a row and improved to 28-19 on the year while the Gaels fell to 18-29-1 on the season.
Tailing 2-0 the Pack scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning on third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff's 14th home run of the season and added two more in the bottom of the fifth. The first run scored on a ground out by shortstop Robert Marcial that plated center fielder Chris Dickerson who reached on a double and the second run scored when Kouzmanoff's RBI single scored second baseman Taylor Pullins who reached on a walk.
With the Pack holding a slim 3-2 advantage Nevada exploded for 13 runs on 12 hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. In total 19 players came to the plate and right fielder Jacob Butler hit three times in the inning. Butler had two hits in the inning including a grand slam in his second plate appearance. Dickerson followed two batters later with a two-run homer. The Pack collected six doubles in the frame with two coming off the bat of first baseman Erick Streelman. Nine players had a hit in the inning with Marcial joining Butler and Streelman as players to have two hits in the sixth.
SMC scored two runs in the seventh on three hits. Second baseman Mike Harris, and center fielder Preston Young singled followed by a walk to designated hitter Delaney Gallagher loaded the bases. Third baseman Bryan Byrne singled home both Gael runs in the inning. A single by pinch hitter Adam Thompson and a throwing error on the play in the top of eighth gave a SMC scoring opportunity. Thompson later scored on a ground out to make the final score 16-5.
Nevada starter Brandon Gottier (4-3) allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six in six innings to pickup his fourth win of the year. Travis Sutton, Darrick Cummings, and Ryan Harbaugh each pitched an inning of relief. SMC's second pitcher of the game Dane Dobrinich fell to 4-5 on the season after giving up four runs in one inning of action.
Kouzmanoff (3-for-4,R,4RBI), Streelman (3-for-5,R) and Dickerson (3-for-5,2R,2RBI) had three hits each for the Pack. Butler (2-for-5,2R,4RBI), and Marcial (2-for-5,2R,2RBI) ended the game with two hits each. Butler, Dickerson, and Kouzmanoff all homered with Butler and Kouzmanoff tying for game high honors with four RBI each. Kouzmanoff's 14th home run of the season moved him into a tie for eighth on the Nevada single season home run list.
Byrne (3-for-4,2RBI) and first baseman Tim Spooner (2-for-2,2RBI) led SMC with three and two hits respectively. Both also tied for team high honors with two RBI apiece.
SMC hosts Pepperdine in a three-game West Coast Conference series beginning Friday at 3:00 p.m. 0n Louis Guisto Field.
