Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team fell behind midway through the first half and never recovered against UC Santa Barbara, en route to a 74-57 loss on Sunday afternoon at McKeon Pavilion. The Gaels dropped to 1-2 on the season and the Gauchos improved to 1-0 in their first game of the year.
The Gaels jumped out to a 5-2 lead, and then a 7-5 lead, but from there the Gauchos took over. Santa Barbara shot 48.4 percent from the floor and 53.3 percent from 3-point range, while the Gaels shot 31.3 percent from the floor and 27.6 percent from 3-point range.
Saint Mary's was led offensively by Triola Jackson, who scored 17 points on 6-of-16 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds in 37 minutes. Jackson also went 5-for-5 from the free throw line, and the Gaels as a team went 9-for-9.
Junior guard Evynn Van Burger added 13 points for Saint Mary's, freshman Mikaela Cowles had seven points and Brianna Winn added five points off the bench.
UC Santa Barbara was led by Jenna Green and Kristen Mann, who each had 19 points, and Ana Onaidia had four 3-pointers for 12 points.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Friday, November 26 when they host Washington State at 7:05 p.m. at McKeon Pavilion. Friday's game is the second game of the Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic. Northwestern State will face Tennessee-Chattanooga in the first game of the tournament, beginning at 5:05 p.m.
