
Women's Basketball Concludes Non-Conference Schedule

WHAT'S ON SCHEDULE: The Saint Mary's women's basketball team concludes its non-conference schedule with a road game against Southern Utah in Cedar City, UT on Tuesday, December 28 at 7:05 p.m. (MST) at The Centrum and a home contests against Marist College on Thursday, December 30 at 7:05 p.m. at McKeon Pavilion. The Gaels go into both games with a 6-5 overall record after a 57-51 victory over UC Davis on Tuesday.
WHO'S HOT: Saint Mary's guard Brianna Winn recorded a season-high 15 points, one point shy of her career-high, on Tuesday night against UC Davis. Winn went 5-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range, added five rebounds and hit two clutch free throws to seal the victory for the Gaels. Winn is now averaging 6.5 point per game on the season and is second on the team with 26 assists.
SAINT MARY'S RADIO COVERAGE: All Saint Mary's women's basketball games during the 2004-05 season can be heard on the Internet at www.SMCGaels.com. This week's games can be heard live beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday against Southern Utah and at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday against Marist Colleges, with Ryan Reggiani and Jim Owen calling the game action. The Internet broadcast service is being offered through an agreement signed by College Sports and Real Networks at a cost of $6.95 per month. For that price, they receive a username and password that allows them access to all live/archived audio events on our site.
SCOUTING THE THUNDERBIRDS: Southern Utah comes into the game with a 4-5 overall record and a 3-2 record at The Centrum. The Thunderbirds have been led by Janis Beal, who leads the team with 11.1 points and 30.9 minutes per game. Sarah Hutton is averaging 10.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game and Cassie Warburton and Kristin Pierce are each averaging over nine points per game. Pierce is also averaging 5.1 rebounds per game. The Thunderbirds are averaging 65.4 points per game and are allowing 67.4.
SAINT MARY'S VERSUS SOUTHERN UTAH THE SERIES: The Gaels hold a 2-0 record all-time against the Thunderbirds. Saint Mary's has recorded two home victories against Southern Utah, the last a 74-59 win on November 24, 2000 at McKeon Pavilion.
SCOUTING THE RED FOXES: Marist comes into the week with a 3-4 overall record and faces San Francisco on Tuesday night at War Memorial Gymnasium before heading over to Moraga. The Red Foxes have been led by Kristin Keller, who is averaging 14.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in 34.6 minutes of action. Fifi Camara has started all seven games and is averaging 14.3 points 9.7 rebounds in 26.9 minutes per game and makes up the second half of the scoring duo. Megan Vetter is averaging 7.7 points per game and Alisa Kresge is averaging 4.7 rebounds per game.
SAINT MARY'S VERSUS MARIST THE SERIES: Thursday's game against the Red Foxes will mark the first time in school history that the two teams will have met.
GAELS RANK SECOND IN 3'S: Saint Mary's ranks second in 3-point field goals made among WCC schools after 11 games. The Gaels have made66 3-point field on the season for an average of 6.0. Santa Clara leads the conference with 9.44 3-point field goals made.
GETTING DEFENSIVE: The Saint Mary's defense has been outstanding at times this season for head coach Michelle Jacoby. The Gaels are holding their opponents to 61.6 points per game, forcing 17.1 turnovers per game and opposing teams are shooting 41.6 percent from the field. Saint Mary's has held five opponents to under 52 points or less this season.
JACKSON LEADING THE WCC: Saint Mary's senior forward Triola Jackson leads the West Coast Conference in scoring after 11 games this season. Jackson is averaging 16.5 points per game. Jackson is also second in the conference in rebounding, averaging 9.5 boards per game. San Francisco's Mary Jane Krueger leads the conference with 9.7 rebounds per game. Jackson is also fifth in field goal percentage, making 48.3 percent of her shots.
DOUBLE-DIGITS SNAPPED FOR JACKSON: The Gaels' Triola Jackson recorded double-digits in points for Saint Mary's first 10 games, but had that streak snapped against UC Davis. Jackson scored a season-low eight points against a variety of defenses geared to shut her down. Jackson did record a season-high 14 rebounds, two shy of her career-high, including seven rebounds in the game, helping lead the Gaels to the victory.
SAINT MARY'S BREAKS PRESEASON WNIT RECORD: The Gaels made 14 3-pointers in the first round of the preseason WNIT in Tucson, AZ against the No. 24-ranked Arizona Wildcats on Friday, November 12, breaking the tournament record. The previous tournament high was 12, set by Connecticut in 2001. The 14 3-pointers in the second highest in school history, the record is 15 made 3-pointers set against Gonzaga on January 11, 1997.
GAELS PICKED FOURTH IN PRESEASON COACHES POLL: Saint Mary's was picked to finish fourth in the West Coast Conference, according to the conference's coaches. The Gaels received 38 points, and were picked to finish behind Gonzaga, which was picked to finish first, Pepperdine, and Loyola Marymount, respectively. Last season the Gaels finished conference play with a 7-7 record and a fifth place finish.
WEEK IN REVIEW: Saint Mary's went 1-0 last week, beating UC Davis 57-51 at The Pavilion in Davis, CA. The Gaels held UC Davis to 32.7 percent shooting for the game, including 26.9 percent shooting in the second half, and caused 19 turnovers. Saint Mary's turned on the defense in the second half and held the Aggies to 2-of-9 from 3-point range, while coming away with seven steals. The Gaels were led offensively by Brianna Winn and Lauren Shaughnessy, who stepped up the offense on the outside, while the Aggies consistently double-teamed leading scorer Triola Jackson. Winn led the way with 15 points, including three 3-pointers and five rebounds. Shaughnessy scored a season-high 11 points, including 6-of-6 from the free throw line, three assists and two steals. Jackson grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds, and added eight points on 3-of-6 shooting.
HEAD COACH Michelle Jacoby: In her fifth season as head coach of the Gaels is Michelle Jacoby. The Gaels finished 15-14 in her fourth season as head coach and led a young and talented team to a fifth place finish in West Coast Conference play with a 7-7 record, after coaches picked the team to finish in eighth place. Jacoby's career record now stands at 72-53 in five years. Jacoby had four players earn postseason accolades last season, including two All-WCC Honorable Mention players and two WCC All-Freshman Team members. This season the Gaels return 13 players, including all five starters from last year's team. Saint Mary's was picked to finish in fourth place in the preseason coaches' poll, announced by the West Coast Conference.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE GAELS: Saint Mary's begins West Coast Conference play when they travel to Portland, OR to face the Pilots at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, January 6. The Gaels will then travel to Spokane, WA to face the Gonzaga Bulldogs at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday, January 8.
