Softball Gives Up Both to Cal

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team dropped both games of its season opening doubleheader against Bay Area rival Cal. The Golden Bears won the first game 7-1 and the second 9-2. With the loses, the Gaels fall to 0-2 overall while Cal improves to 4-0.

In game one, Jennifer Eaton suffered her first loss of the season as the Gaels fell to the Bears 7-1. Eaton pitched five innings, allowing four runs and eight hits. Lauren Gardner then took over for the Gaels, allowing four hits and three runs. Kelly Anderson picked up the win for the Bears, improving her overall record to 2-0. Anderson pitched the entire game, allowing two hits and one earned run.

The Gaels' only run of the game came from freshman Lauren Mello's solo homerun at the bottom of the sixth inning. This was the first career homerun for Mello, which she hit at her second at bat as a Gael.

Saint Mary's managed to hold off the Bears for the last three innings. In the fifth, Cal Kristen Bayless' double hit in Roni Rodriguez. Then in the sixth inning, the Bears' Vicky Galindo scored from second on Kaleo Eldredge's single. Haley Woods then tripled, sending Eldredge home and a 3-0 Cal lead. Woods scored soon after on Jessica Pamanian's single to put the Bears up 4-0. Mello's sixth inning homerun brought the score to 4-1 before Cal added to its lead with a three-run homerun by Eldredge.

In game two, Cal came out strong again with an explosive third inning, scoring five runs, which included a two-run single by Rodrigeuz. Cal added to their lead with one run in the both the second and fifth innings. Cal's Chelsea Spencer added two more in the seventh on her double to put the Bears up 9-1.

Saint Mary's first run came in the second inning when Jordann Bass' single drove in Mello from third. The Gaels' other run came in the last inning off a Heather Sinnott single, scoring Beverly Rivas from second base.

Kristina Thorson took the win, allowing four hits and one run in five innings. Lisa Bautista got the loss after throwing three innings with seven hits and six runs.

The Gaels travel to Hawaii later this week to participate in the Hawaii Paradise Classic beginning Feb. 5, when they play Tennessee at 2:00 PM.
