Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's head football coach Vincent White has named Don Frease as the new offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the football team. Frease comes to SMC with 26 years of coaching experience at the high school, Division I and professional levels.
"Coach Frease brings a lot of experience and expertise in the offense we're running at Saint Mary's College," said White. "I'm fortunate to have a coach of Don's experience as part of our coaching staff. With his experience he'll be able to move our run and shoot offense to the level needed to compete against our schedule."
Before taking six years away from football, Frease was the head coach of the Memphis Pharaohs and the Portland Forest Dragons in the Arena Football League (AFL). Prior to Frease's arrival into the AFL, he was the offensive coordinator and receivers and tight ends coach at Vanderbilt University from 1991 to 1995. At Vanderbilt, Frease's offense averaged 306.8 yards of total offense per game in his four years at the position.
"I'm excited to get back into college coaching," said Frease. "There is nothing like the excitement and the satisfaction of working with college student-athletes."
Before Vanderbilt, Frease was the receivers and place kickers coach at the University of Colorado from 1987-91. At Colorado Frease helped the Buffalos capture the 1990 National Championship when they went 11-1-1 and beat Notre Dame 10-9 in the Orange Bowl. Frease was key to the development of Jeff Campbell, Mike Pritchard and Charles Johnson into National Football League wide receivers.
Frease joined Colorado after serving a three-year sting in the United States Football League's (USFL) as an assistant coach for the Denver Gold from 1982 to 1985. During his time with Denver, Frease coached a running back by the name of Vincent White.
Frease started his coaching career as an the assistant freshman coach at his old prep school, James Lick High School (San Jose, CA) in 1972. He moved on to Stanford from 1973-76 as a grad assistant and the junior varsity head coach. He then coached the tight ends and wide receivers at San Jose State (1977-78) and helped coach Stacey Bailey into the NFL. From there he moved on to the University of California where he had the same responsibilities from 1979 through 1981. While at Cal, he helped Matt Bouza, Joe Rose and Mick Luckhurst get into the NFL.
Frease earned his bachelor's degree in Sociology at the University of Oregon in 1972. At Oregon, he lettered three times as a defensive back. He had three career interceptions and he also recovered three onside kicks. Frease is married to the former Deborah (Debi) Climer, and the couple has two children, Matthew (21) and McKenna (18).
