Women's Basketball Drops Road Game to Gonzaga

Spokane, WA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team fell behind early to the Gonzaga Bulldogs and could never recover, falling 68-45 on Thursday night at The Kennel in Spokane, WA. With the loss Saint Mary's falls to 5-4 in West Coast Conference play and 13-10 on the season.

The Gaels were led offensively by Savannah Williams, who scored 12 points and added two assists, Monica Mertle and Evynn Van Burger each had six points and Lauren Shaughnessy added five points.

Saint Mary's was held to 31 percent shooting from the floor and 23 percent shooting from 3-point range. Gonzaga shot 41 percent from the field and 77 percent from the free throw line.

In the second half the Gaels fell behind early and played back-and-forth for the most part of the second half.

In the first half the Gaels got off to a slow start, falling behind 9-0 to the Bulldogs, before Williams hit a jump shot with 16:11 remaining in the first half.

Saint Mary's followed the slow start with a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 12-9 with 13:50 left in the first half following a Shaughnessy 3-pointer.

The Bulldogs answered with several offensive rebounds and layups to open up a 31-17 lead with 4:02 left in the game.

At the end of the first half, the Bulldogs held a 40-21 lead. After the first 20 minutes of action the Gaels were led offensively by Williams who had six points, Shaughnessy added five points, and Mertle and Serena Benavente had four points each. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Gaels 20-10 in the half and Saint Mary's had 13 turnovers to the Bulldogs 7.

Saint Mary's returns to action on Saturday, February 14 when it travels to Portland, OR to face the Portland Pilots at 7:05 p.m.
