Moraga, CA - Lindsay Lopez grabbed a career-high seven rebounds and added four points in her final home game as a Gael, as Saint Mary's swept its regular season series against Santa Clara with a 74-60 victory on Saturday night in front of 1,166 fans at McKeon Pavilion. Lopez, the Gaels' lone senior from Antioch, CA made her first start of the season and connected on her only 3-point attempt as Saint Mary's improved to 15-11 on the season and 7-5 in West Coast Conference action. Santa Clara dropped to 8-17 and 4-8 in conference.
With the win, the Gaels swept the season series against their Bay Area rivals, taking two from San Francisco and two from Santa Clara. The sweep against Santa Clara is the first since the 2000-01 season and the San Francisco sweep is the first under head coach Michelle Jacoby.
The Gaels also moved into sole possession of fourth place in the conference after Portland lost to Gonzaga 83-71 on Saturday night in Portland, OR.
Saint Mary's also scored in the 70s for the second consecutive game, and the offense has now scored 70-plus points in three out of their last five games.
In the game the Gaels were led offensively by junior Triola Jackson, who scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and freshman Lauren Shaughnessy scored a career-high 14 points. Shaughnessy's 14 points tops her career-high of 10 points, which she recorded on Thursday against San Francisco.
The Gaels also received solid performances by freshman Monica Mertle, who grabbed 10 rebounds and added nine points and sophomore Brianna Winn scored a career-high eight points off the bench.
As a team the Gaels held Santa Clara to 35 percent shooting from the field and 17 percent shooting from 3-point range. Saint Mary's shot 46 percent from the field and 46 percent from 3-point range.
The Gaels return to action on Thursday, February 26, when they travel to Malibu, CA to face the Pepperdine Waves at 7:05 p.m.
