Women's Basketball Ends Skid, Beats San Francisco

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team broke out of their two-game losing streak and offensive slump with a 75-57 victory over San Francisco on Saturday night in front of 1,083 fans at McKeon Pavilion. The Gaels scored a West Coast Conference high 75 points and the 75 points is their second highest this season. Saint Mary's also shot 49 percent from the field to improve to 13-9 overall and 5-3 in WCC action. San Francisco fell to 8-13 overall and 1-7 in conference action.

The Gaels offensive explosion started in the first half, when the Gaels scored 33 points and continued in the second half as Saint Mary's put up 42 points in the final 20 minutes of the game.

Saint Mary's was led offensively by sophomore Evynn Van Burger, who scored a career-high 20 points in the victory. Van Burger's previous career-high was 19 against Pepperdine last season.

The Gaels also used excellent offensive performances by Triola Jackson, who recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Monica Mertle had 11 points and eight rebounds.

While Saint Mary's was playing solid offensively, their defense didn't slip too far. The Gaels held San Francisco to 35 percent shooting from the field and 28 percent shooting from 3-point range. The Dons also committed 21 turnovers and shot 53 percent from the free throw line.

The Gaels return to action on Thursday, December 12, when they travel to Spokane, WA to take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs at 7:05 p.m.
