Baseball Comes Back to Beat Gonzaga

Moraga, CA - Sam Carter tied the game with a two-run home run and Preston Young put the game out of reach with a grand slam, as the Saint Mary's baseball team beat the Gonzaga Bulldogs 8-3 on Sunday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field. With the win the Gaels improve to 6-17 overall and 1-2 in West Coast Conference action. The Bulldogs fell to 8-12 and 2-1 in conference.
The Gaels trailed 3-1 until Carter hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning after Adam Bellows singled to lead off the inning to tie the game 3-3.
With the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the eight inning, the Gaels broke the tie and took their first lead of the three-game series when Bellows singled home Mike Sansoe with two outs. After loading the bases, the Young then pitched hit and hit a grand slam over the scoreboard in right field to put the game out of reach.
While the Gaels came from behind, Saint Mary's starting pitcher Jordan Simo pitched his third complete game of the season, keeping the Gaels in reach the entire game and improved to 4-3. Simo gave up three runs in the fifth inning, but pitched close to perfect in the other eight innings. The junior right hander struck out nine batters, while giving up six hits.
Offensively, the Gaels were led by Bryan Byrne, Bellows, Carter, Gilbert Gil, who each had two hits. Carter added two RBI, Young had four RBI and Gil and Bellows added one RBI.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Tuesday, March 23 when it hosts Stanford at 2 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field.
