This Week in Women's Lacrosse:
The Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team will close its five-game homestand when it plays two home games this week. The Gaels will play Ohio University on Saturday, March 27 and Hofstra on Sunday, March 28. Both games will begin at 1 p.m. and will be played in Saint Mary's Stadium.
Saint Mary's enters the week with a 2-5 record after going 1-1 last week. SMC snapped a four-game losing skid by posting a 13-9 win over Wagner College. SMC then lost to George Washington 11-7 on Thursday.
The Ohio Bobcats are currently 3-2 this season and are coming off a 20-10 victory over Howard University. Ohio will play at Stanford on March 23 before playing the Gaels. Hofstra also has a 3-2 record following a 15-9 victory over Boston College on March 21. The Hofstra Pride will also play at Stanford, on March 26, before making the trip to Moraga.
Who's Hot:
Senior attacker Colette Spencer scored 10 goals last week to help SMC to a 1-1 record. Against Wagner, Spencer netted a career-high seven goals, which also tied a school record for most goals in a game. Against George Washington, Spencer scored three goals to notch her fifth hat-trick of the season. She now has a team-leading 25 goals and leads the team with 24 ground balls and 20 draw controls.
A Look at First-Year Head Coach Brandon Badgley:
Brandon Badgley was announced as the new head women's lacrosse coach on December 10, 2003. Badgley, who is currently 2-5 at SMC, came to Saint Mary's from San Luis Obispo, CA where he was the head coach for the Cal Poly women's lacrosse club team from 2000-03. Over that time, Badgley coached the Mustangs to a 70-13 overall record, which included three straight US Lacrosse Women's Division Intercollegiate Associates (WDIA) national championships in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Badgley was named the WDIA National Coach of the Year in 2003.
Scouting the Ohio University Bobcats:
Ohio University enters this week with a 3-2 overall record. The Bobcats won their first two games of the season over Albany and Duquesne, before suffering back-to-back losses to North Carolina and Johns Hopkins. Most recently, Ohio defeated Howard on March 13. Ohio will play at Stanford before meeting the Gaels on Saturday.
Three players have scored in double figures in goals this season for Ohio. Leading the team in goals is Lynz Keys with 14 in five games. Leading the team is points is Dana Dobbie with 17 points on 13 goals and a team-high four assists. The third player to score more than 10 goals is Becky Oxman who has 11 in five games. Jennifer Cassidy is the team's leading keeper. Cassidy has started all five games and has an 8.93 goals against average, 45 saves and a .536 save percentage.
As a team, Ohio is averaging 10.9 goals per game while its opponents are scoring 9.1 goals per contest. Saturday's game will mark the second game between SMC and Ohio. Saint Mary's defeated Ohio 15-7 during the 2003 season.
Scouting the Hofstra Pride:
Hofstra comes into the week with a 3-2 record and will play at Stanford on Friday. The Pride is coming off a 15-9 victory over Boston College on March 21. Hofstra opened the season with a loss to Rutgers (12-7) and then posted back-to-back wins over Massachusetts (10-8) and Cornell (11-9), respectively. After those two wins, Hofstra lost to No. 4 ranked Loyola (MD) 12-7.
Becky Thorn leads the squad in goals with 10 after scoring three times against BC. Leading the team in points is Kimberly Hillier with 11, which includes six goals and five assists. After not posting a goal in the first four games of the season, Heather Albro exploded with a four-goal game against the Eagles. Caitlin Connoloy and Mary Romano are tied for second on the team with six goals each.
Lisa Papa has logged all 300 minutes in net for the Pride this season. Papa has a 10.00 goals against average with 43 saves and a 46.2 save percentage. As a team, Hofstra is averaging 10.0 goals and 24.0 shots per game. Sunday's game between SMC and Hofstra will mark the first ever meeting between the two schools.
Last Week In Review:
Last week Saint Mary's post a 1-1 record. The Gaels opened the week with a 13-9 victory over Wagner College before dropping is final match of the week to George Washington, 11-7. The win over Wagner snapped a four-game losing skid for the Gaels.
In the win over Wagner, Colette Spencer led the way with seven goals, matching a school record for most goals in a game. Jackie Spencer helped to secure the win with three goals and Dearborn David, Ally High and Katy Flood also recorded goals.
On Thursday against George Washington, Saint Mary's was tied with the Colonials 4-4 with 12 minutes remaining in the first half. GW scored the next four goals of the game to open 8-4 lead before pulling out an 11-7 win at Saint Mary's Stadium. Colette and Jackie Spencer led the Gaels with three goals each. Colette now has five hat tricks this season, while Jackie recorded her second hat trick and sixth multi-goal game of the season.
Colette Spencer SMC's All-Time Leader in Goals Scored:
With 10 total goals last week, senior attacker Colette Spencer continues to improve on her school record for goals. She scored four goals against Lehigh to move ahead of Megan Bryan's total of 133 goals. Spencer now has 146 career goals scored, and counting. Spencer also holds the SMC record for most goals in a season when she tallied 53 goals in 2003 and she tied Bryan for the most goals in a game when she scored seven against Wagner on March 16.
Freshman Impact:
Of the five freshmen on the roster, three have started all six games this season in Jackie Spencer, Maddie Marsh and Lisa Vogeley. Spencer is the team's second leading scorer with 15 goals, which are 10 behind her sister Colette. Marsh is also in the top five on the team in goals scored with four and her one assist gives her five total points in six games. The third freshman starter, Vogeley, is a vital member of the SMC defensive unit.
Next Week in Women's Lacrosse:
Saint Mary's will take next week off before making a two-game road trip to the East Coast. Saint Mary's will play its next game on Wednesday, April 7 at Harvard University. That game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Pacific Time. The Gaels will end the road trip with a game against Longwood College on Friday, April 9. That game will begin at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.
