Men's Tennis Handles UC Riverside 5-2

Moraga, CA - On Thursday, the Saint Mary's men's tennis team picked up its fifth straight victory by defeating the UC Riverside Highlanders 5-2 from the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex. The victory improves the Gaels record to 9-6, while UC Riverside falls to 1-11 on the season.
UC Riverside opened the match by winning two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. UCR's duo of Mark Contreras and Brent Davis posted an 8-4 win over Martin Marechal and Andre Sion at number one and a Jeremy Owens and Norman Tam were 8-5 winners over Vincent LeBorgne and J.J. Whitlinger at number two, capturing the first point of the match.
In singles play, the Gaels were too strong for the Highlanders as SMC picked up five of the six singles matches. The five singles victories were all straight set wins for Saint Mary's. Impressive wins at singles came from No. 1 Andre Sion, who posted a 6-4, 6-0 win over Norman Tam, and No. 2 player Martin Marechal was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Brent Davis.
Vincent LeBorgne, playing at No. 4, won 6-3, 6-2, No. 5 player Adam Fauvre posted a 6-2, 6-1 win, and J.J. Whitlinger scored a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles. The only loss in singles play for SMC was by Rafael Lopez, who dropped his match at No. 3 to Mark Contreras 4-6, 6-4 (11-9).
Saint Mary's will return to the courts on Saturday, March 27 when the play an exhibition match against Team Great Britain. That match will begin at noon at the Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, CA.
