BATTLE IN THE BAY CLASSIC

True freshman Alexander Gschiel represented the Gaels at the annual Battle in the Bay Classic held at California Tennis Club in San Francisco. The Austria native fell in the first round of the main draw back on Thursday, 1-6 5-7, to Boise State's Izan Orgiles. He would advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket after a retired win over Cal's Timofey Stepanov but lost to Duke tennis player Saahith Jayaraman in a competitive three sets, 0-6 6-3 6-10, on Saturday to end his weekend.

NORCAL INVITATIONAL SHOOTOUT

The rest of the Saint Mary's men's tennis squad remained on campus as the Gaels hosted the NorCal Invitational Shootout. Juan Pedro Etchecoin and Devin Stuppin combined to go 4-0 in singles play over the two-day event as the only two Gaels to finish the weekend undefeated. Etchecoin recorded a straight sets win over Sacramento State's Alexander Simone, 7-5 7-5, and then won set one against Vraj Patel from Pacific before Patel retired to give him his second victory. True freshman Stuppin had a three-set win over Pacific's Niv Zuckerman and then wrapped things up with a 6-4 6-1 win over UC Davis' Yahan Zhang to cap off his unbeaten weekend.

Sam Simmonds and Frano Sucic also recorded a pair of wins each on the weekend, combining to go 4-2 in their singles matches. First-year Gael and Alabama transfer Brendan Loh finished 1-1 with a singles win over Pacific's Jonty Giesen, 6-2 6-4, while senior Joey Lyon grabbed a straight sets victory over Sacramento State for his lone singles win of the weekend. Doubles wins for Saint Mary's came from Brendan Loh/Finn Dyer and Juan Pedro Etchecoin/Frano Sucic. Dyer and Loh won a dramatic tiebreaker, 8-6, to take down Pacific while Etchecoin/Sucic made quick work of UC Davis with a 6-2 victory.
