Baseball Opens Series With 6-5 Victory Over USF

Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's rallied from a 4-1 deficit, scoring five unanswered runs en route to a 6-5 victory over visiting San Francisco in Game 1 of a three game series on Friday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field. The win improves the Gaels' record to 4-9 in West Coast Conference play and 10-26 on the season. San Francisco fell to 6-7 in conference and 17-20 overall.

After San Francisco took a 4-1 lead after the fifth inning, the Gaels answered with one run in the bottom of the fifth when Sam Carter singled home Gilbert Gil to cut the lead to 4-2.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Gaels tacked on two more runs when Mike Sansoe and Stefan Foushee had back-to-back singles to open the inning. After a wild pitch, Sansoe scored on a Mike Harris sacrifice fly and Foushee scored on an error by San Francisco's right fielder to tie the game 4-4.

The Gaels broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-out rally. Delaney Gallagher walked, followed by a Sansoe bunt single and then Foushee hit a two-run double to left center field to score the eventual game-winning run.

While the Gaels climbed back in the game offensively, relief pitcher Parker Mangum was shutting down the Dons on the mound. Mangum relieved starting pitcher Jordan Simo in the sixth inning and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run. Mangum picked up his first victory of the year and the first of his career. Freshman right hander Michael Nisco relieved Mangum in the ninth inning to pick up his second save of the year.

Offensively, the Gaels were led by Sansoe (2-for-3, two runs), Foushee (2-for-4, two RBI) and Gilbert Gil (2-for-5, RBI).

Saint Mary's returns to action on Saturday, when it faces the Dons at 1 p.m. in the second game of a three game series at Louis Guisto Field.
