Los Angeles, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team lost to the Loyola Marymount Lions 10-5 on Friday afternoon at Page Stadium in Los Angeles. With the loss the Gaels drop to 3-4 in West Coast Conference action and 8-20 overall. LMU remains in first place in conference with a 8-2 record and a 17-12-1 overall record.
LMU found themselves down 1-0 before they got a chance to come up to the plate because of a two out RBI single in the top of the first inning by Saint Mary's first basemen Delaney Gallagher. In the bottom half of the inning the Lions answered back with three runs. After James Cooper and Kyle Mura singled up the middle with one out, Clint McGill came up and hit a grounder to third basemen Brian Byrne who tried to start a double play but threw wide of second base into right field allowing Cooper to score to tie the game. McGill then stole second base, with runners on second and third, Jonathan Higashi brought home Mura with a RBI groundout to shortstop. The scoring continued a batter later as Joe Frazee lined a base hit to center to score McGill and make the score 3-1 Lions.
In the top of the second inning the Gaels would get runners to second and third with just one out and would eventually tie the game on a two run single to left by second basemen Michael Harris. That is all the Gaels offense would get off of Quaglieri the rest of the afternoon.
In the bottom of the third the Lions had another three run inning thanks again to a poor throw from third basemen Brian Byrne. With the bases loaded and one out Chris Pettit hit a grounder to the left side that Byrne fielded and threw home to try and get a force out on the runner Higashi. The throw sailed wide again allowing two runs to score making it a 5-3 LMU lead. Jonathan Oller then stepped up to the plate and delivered home another run with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The game would stay at 6-3 until the bottom of the fifth inning when McGill led off with a single to left and immediately stole second base for the second time in the contest. An out later Frazee brought him in with a RBI double to left field. With two outs in the inning Oller doubled off the Blue Monster in left field to make it a 8-3 ballgame. In the sixth inning the Lions put the game away with a sacrifice fly by McGill and an RBI single by Higashi to make it a 10-3 game.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Saturday, April 3 when they face the Lions at 1 p.m. at Page Stadium in Los Angeles.
