San Jose, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball used a four-run third inning to defeat the San Jose State University Spartans 4-2 on Tuesday night at Municipal Stadium. Delaney Gallagher delivered a two-run double, to spur the Gaels offense.
Travis Becktel had two hits on the night, a double in the fourth and a leadoff triple in seventh. Becktel took sole possession of first place in the WAC with five triples on the year. Kevin Frandsen drilled his tenth double of the year, as the Spartans scattered seven hits on the evening. Only in the seventh and ninth did they post two hits in an inning.
The Spartans (17-24-1) who trailed for most of the game, started a rally with two down in the ninth. Darrell Sales reached on an error, followed by Anthony Contreras' single, and a Brandon Fromm RBI base hit, the only time San Jose State collected back-to-back hits on the night.
Saint Mary's starter Justin Sloan (2-3) allowed one earned run in his seven innings of work. He struck out six and walked none. For the Spartans, Matt Winck was saddled with his second straight loss, moving to 2-2 on the year. Winck tossed two and a third innings. He gave up six hits and took the brunt off all four St. Mary's runs.
Jose Amaya came in to relieve Winck and in four and two-thirds innings, he relinquished only two hits while striking out six, including three straight in the fifth inning. Brad Kilby worked the last two innings, and gave up a hit and fanned one.
Darrell Sales, had a part in both of San Jose State's runs. Sales pinch hit in the seventh inning for Tyler Fernandes and delivered a sacrifice fly to score Becktel to break the shutout. In the ninth, he reached on an error by the second baseman Michael Harris, and scored on Fromm's RBI single.
Multiple hits were hard to come by on Tuesday night for SJSU. Anthony Contreras and Becktel were the only two Spartans with two hits.
The Gaels improved to 13-30 in the 2004 campaign in the first meeting of the year between these two teams. Their first scheduled meeting back on February 24th was rained out and will be made up on Wed., May 12 at 2:00 p.m. in Moraga.
