Women's Basketball Drops Exhibition Opener Against Love and Basketball

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team played a solid opening game on Saturday afternoon against Love and Basketball in their first and only exhibition game of the season. The Gaels dropped the game 65-59, but had an overall good learning experience on the day.
Saint Mary's had 12 players see action on Saturday and 10 of those 12 players recorded at least two points.
The Gaels were led offensively by Monica Mertle, who was playing in her first game since the 2003-04 season. Mertle scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers and added four rebounds and four assists.
Saint Mary's was also led by Sheridan Arredondo, who came off the bench to score eight points and grab two rebounds in 18 minutes and freshman Jontelle Smith had seven points, four assists and three steals in 15 minutes.
As a team the Gaels shot 36.2 percent from the field, 38.1 percent from 3-point range and 81.8 percent from the free throw line. Saint Mary's recorded eight steals and 13 assists, but committed 23 turnovers.
Love and Basketball earned the victory behind 16 points and 13 rebounds from Denise Woods. Bryn Britton added 15 points and Kim Gipson had 14 points and eight rebounds.
The Gaels also received six points from Erika Urmonaite and Mikaela Cowles and Brianna Winn had five points and three assists.
Saint Mary's opens the regular season on Friday, November 18 against Eastern Washington at 7:05 p.m. in Cheney, WA. The Gaels can be heard live on SMCGaels.com.
