
Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener at Eastern Washington

Cheney, WA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team opened the 2005-06 season with a tough 63-53 loss to Eastern Washington on Friday night in Cheney, WA. The Gaels jumped out to a six-point halftime lead, but couldn't slow down the Eagles in the second half.
With the loss the Gaels fall to 0-1, while Eastern Washington picks up its first victory of the year and improves to 1-1.
Saint Mary's jumped out to an early lead on Friday night, but couldn't hold on. The Gaels led 17-3 midway through the first half and then took a 26-20 lead into the break.
But in the second half the Gaels were outscored 43-27, as Eastern Washington shot 65.5 percent from the floor, while the Gaels shot 33.3 percent in the second half. For the game the Gaels shot 30.8 percent from the field, 21.4 percent from 3-point range and committed 27 turnovers.
Offensively the Gaels were led by Monica Mertle, who scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Mertle also added seven rebounds. Eghosa Obaiza added 11 points off the bench and grabbed three rebounds in 11 minutes of action.
The Gaels also received nine points from Serena Benavente and five points from Evynn Van Burger.
Eastern Washington had four players record at least eight points or more, but also struggled on offense, especially in the first half. For the game the Eagles had 26 turnovers.
