
Women's Basketball Falls at Washington State

Pullman, WA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team received a game-high 16 from freshman guard Jontelle Smith, but it wasn't enough as Washington State beat the Gaels 53-43 on Sunday afternoon in Pullman, WA.
With the loss the Gaels drop to 0-2 to begin the season, while the Cougars improved to 2-0, after beating WCC opponent Pepperdine on Friday night.
Both teams jumped out to sluggish starts, with the Gaels taking a 7-3 lead, with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half. The Gaels held a 20-18 lead at halftime, but only managed 23 points in the second half, compared to the Cougars' 35.
Overall, Smith shot 4-of-8 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Sheridan Arredondo came off the bench to score eight points and added five rebounds and Eghosa Obaiza had six points and three rebounds.
As a team the Gaels shot 30.2 percent from the field, 17.6 percent from the 3-point line and 50.0 percent from the free throw line. Saint Mary's committed 13 turnovers, compared to Washington State's 22. But the Gaels were outrebounded by the Cougars 50-28. Washington State also shot 32.0 percent from the field, 25.0 percent from 3-point range and 66.7 percent from the free throw line.
The Cougars were led by Adriane Ferguson, who had 12 points and nine rebounds, Kate Benz added 11 points and 12 rebounds and Katie Appleton added 10 points.
In the second half, the Gaels jumped out to a quick 23-20 lead with 15:36 left in the game, but the Cougars went on a 6-0 run to open the game up and retake the lead. After Saint Mary's hit a basket to cut it to 26-25, the Cougars went on a 9-0 run to open up a 35-25 lead with 10:29 left in the game.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Friday, November 25 when it hosts the Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic. Central Florida and Butler will play each other in the first game of the tournament beginning at 5 p.m., followed by Saint Mary's versus Princeton at 7:05 p.m.
