
Women's Basketball Rallies For Road Win Against Bradley

Peoria, IL - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team trailed by one point with just over five minutes remaining in the game, but that's when the outside shooting caught fire. The Gaels hit back-to-back 3-pointers by Maija Lahde and Mikaela Cowles, to open up a five point lead and seal a 60-55 victory over the Bradley Braves on Thursday night at Robertson Field House in Peoria, IL.
The Gaels also hit clutch free throws over the final minute, including two by freshman Jontelle Smith and one by Lahde. With the win the Gaels improve to 3-6 overall and snap a four-game losing streak. Bradley fell to 3-5 with the loss.
After the Gaels held the lead in the game for most of the first half and 10 minutes in the second half, both teams went back-and-forth down the stretch. In the game there were 13 lead changes and the score was tied three times over the 40 minutes.
For Saint Mary's it was a complete team effort, with Jontelle Smith leading the way with 17 points. Erika Urmonaite finished with 11 points and Maija Lahde finished with 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Junior center Victoria Ramirez also had a career-night, scoring eight points, adding four rebounds in 26 minutes of action. Mikaela Cowles had six points, including two 3-pointers and Sheridan Arredondo had four points, five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and three steals in 31 minutes of action.
As a team the Gaels shot 44 percent from the field, 27.3 percent from 3-point range and 71.4 percent from the free throw line. The Braves shot 35.6 percent from the field and 18.8 percent from 3-point range. Bradley was led offensively by Devyn Flanagan, who had 11 points, four rebounds and four steals.
In the first half the Gaels were led by Smith, who scored nine points. Saint Mary's had a very balanced offensive attack in the opening half as Ramirez and Lahde each had six points off the bench and Arredondo had four points and five blocks.
In the first 20 minutes, the Gaels shot 46.4 percent from the field, while the Braves shot 31.0 percent. Saint Mary's bench outscored the Braves 15-9 in the opening half.
The Gaels return to action on Saturday, December 17, when they face Northwestern at 2:05 p.m. (CST) in Evanston, IL. The Wildcats are coming off a 90-72 loss to Western Michigan on Wednesday night and carry a 3-5 record.
