
Women's Basketball Pulls Out Thriller Against Sacramento State

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team used a clutch layup by Eghosa Obaiza and Sheridan Arredondo blocked Sacramento State's final effort as the Gaels pulled out a 52-51 victory on Saturday night at McKeon Pavilion.
Obaiza's layup at the 1 minute, 7 second mark of the game put the Gaels up by one, and on the Hornets' final possession with 10 second left in the game, Stephanie Cherry drove baseline and had her layup blocked by Arredondo, sealing the victory.
With the win the Gaels improve to 5-8 overall, while Sacramento State dropped to 5-6. The Gaels concluded conference play and will open West Coast Conference play on Friday, January 6 at Portland at 7:05 p.m.
Overall the Gaels were led by Arredondo, who recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Arredondo also added four blocks in 28 minutes.
Maija Lahde came off the bench to score 11 points and grab eight rebounds and Jontelle Smith, Serena Benavente and Eghosa Obaiza each recorded seven points.
The Hornets were led by Katelyn Ciampi, who had 12 points and Ashley Cadotte added 10 points and 16 rebounds.
As a team the Gaels shot 36.7 percent from the field and 14.3 percent from 3-point range. The Hornets shot 34.4 percent from the field and 11.1 percent from 3-point range.
