Softball Drops First Game of the Season

San Diego, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team dropped its first game of the season losing a 9-0 decision to the UC Riverside Highlanders (1-2) in the first game of the 2005 Aztec Invitational. UC Riverside's Sara Radabaugh earned the victory while Saint Mary's freshman Megan Galloway dropped her first decision at the collegiate ranks.

The Highlanders poured out 14 hits scoring runs in four of the five innings played. Five players for Riverside tallied multiple hits. First baseman Jennifer Thomas led the way with one hit and two RBI while Mandy Salcido, Melissa Sanchez, Elizabeth Buck and Jamie Yee each drove in a run.

The Gaels were led offensively by sophomore centerfielder Lauren Mello. Mello batted 2-for-2 with a double. Staci Hamaguchi, Eleni Papailias and Bronwyn Russell each chipped in a hit.

Galloway (0-1) dropped her first game of the season pitching four innings, giving up 11 hits, seven runs, three of which were earned. The newcomer also struck out two while walking three. Radabaugh (1-1) pitched the complete game for UCR, scattering five hits while striking out two and walking one.

Saint Mary's (0-1) returns to action for game two of opening day in the Aztec Invitational against host San Diego State. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. at the SDSU Softball Field.
