Softball Still in Search of First Victory

San Diego, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team dropped its second game of the Aztec Invitational to host San Diego State (2-0) by the score of 8-2. Cori Janelli earned the victory for the Aztecs, while Gael newcomer Kelly Harrison recorded the loss in her first game in a Saint Mary's uniform. SMC senior Claudia Williams belted her first homerun of 2005.

The Aztecs got to Harrison in the top of the third when they scored two runs. SDSU then took advantage of the tiring newcomer pounding out two consecutive three run innings to end the game.

Catcher Megan McDonald led the way for SDSU batting 2-for-3 with a three-run homerun and two runs scored. First baseman Lacey Craft chipped in with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate adding two RBI, while leftfielder Bree Boyer tacked on an RBI.

Saint Mary's recorded its first runs of the season when Williams connected on a Katie Cochran pitch in the bottom of the sixth and drove it over the leftfield wall for a two-run homerun. Junior leftfielder Marcia-Marie Euker scored after drawing a walk. Williams finished the day 1-for-3 while Euker, freshman Chelsea Loftis and junior Shelly Taketa each added a hit.

Janelli (1-0) earned the victory for SDSU after giving up three hits and striking out four and walking one in five innings of work. Cochran came in for two innings of relief, allowing two runs on one hit and striking four while walking one. Harrison (0-1) recorded a complete game in her first appearance at the collegiate ranks for the Gaels, allowing 11 hits and eight runs with three earned.

Saint Mary's returns to action tomorrow to play two games in day-two of the Aztec Invitational. The Gaels begin the day with a 9 a.m. contest against UC Davis and then face No. 20-ranked Long Beach State at 2 p.m. Both games will be played on the SDSU Softball Field.
