San Diego, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team suffered its second straight loss to host San Diego State (5-0) in the 2005 Aztec Invitational by the score of 9-1. The Aztecs recorded 11 hits and scored seven runs in the second inning to run away from the Gaels. Katie Cochran earned the victory for SDSU while Kate Albaugh recorded the loss for SMC.
After a scoreless first inning, the Aztecs awoke in front of their home crowd amassing seven runs in the second inning to run away from the Gaels. SDSU tacked on two more runs, one in the third and another in the sixth.
SDSU third baseman Taryin Casillas led the way offensively, batting 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Catcher Danielle Touhey and first baseman Lacey Craft each batted 2-for-2 with Touhey adding an RBI.
Saint Mary's junior shortstop Justine Larsen continued to swing a hot bat with a 3-for-3 effort. Larsen finished the tournament batting .429 with a homerun and three RBI. Freshman Bronwyn Russell scored the lone Gael run on an Aztec error in the bottom of the third.
Cochran earned her first victory of the season for the Aztecs throwing six innings with three strikeouts while scattering six hits. Albaugh earned her first loss on the season after giving up seven runs but none earned in 1 1/3 innings pitched for the Gaels. She also allowed five hits and walked one. Freshman Megan Galloway came in relief and pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and two runs, one earned.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Wednesday, February 16 when its makes the short trek to Berkeley for a doubleheader against Cal. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Levine-Fricke Field.
