Moraga, CA- With two outs and the bases loaded, down by one and a 1-2 count in the bottom of the seventh inning, senior first baseman Claudia Williams cleared the bases with a walk-off grand slam to hand the Gaels a dramatic 7-4 victory in game two and a sweep over the visiting UC Davis Aggies. In game one, SMC was carried by freshman hurler Megan Galloway, who went the distance to earn her first collegiate victory and give the Gaels a 4-0 shutout over the Aggies. With the win, SMC improves to 3-11 on the season while UCD falls to 3-18 on the year.
Williams' lined shot over the leftfield wall was one of two for the senior in the game. In the bottom of the sixth inning, she jumped all over a Jessica Hancock fastball to give the Gaels a 3-2 lead. Williams' two homeruns now puts her in a tie for first place on the career homerun list with Jenn Arnold.
In addition to Williams' 2-for-3 and five RBI effort, sophomore Michelle Mathis batted 2-for-3 and freshman Bronwyn Russell tallied a two-run double. Mathis also flashed the leather for the Gaels at the hot corner, making several gold-glove putouts.
Russell's two-run double started things off for the Gaels in the bottom of the second. After Williams drew a walk and senior second baseman Staci Hamaguchi singled up the middle, Russell nailed a line-drive down the left field line to bring in both runners.
Sophomore Lauren Gardner pitched six innings for the Gaels, before Galloway came in for relief in the top of the seventh. The freshman earned her second victory on the day after striking out two in her one inning of work.
In game one, Galloway earned her first victory at the collegiate ranks by throwing a complete game shutout. The freshman scattered four hits and struck out six batters in her home debut.
Four different Gaels tallied RBIs, with all four runs coming in the bottom of the sixth inning. After junior catcher Eleni Papailias started the inning with a double to left-center field, the Aggies walked four straight batters until Mathis singled up the middle to drive in sophomore Lauren Mello. Designated player Shelly Taketa later followed to drive in junior shortstop Justine Larsen with a single to left field.
