Softball Falls to No. 9 Oregon State

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep to No. 9-ranked Oregon State Wednesday afternoon from Cottrell Field. The Gaels fell in game one by the score of 7-1 and then dropped the nightcap 8-0. After the day, SMC moves to 7-39 on the season while the Beavers climb to 31-8 overall.

In game one, the Gaels got to the Beavers early. SMC started the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first when senior Claudia Williams belted a double to left-centerfield that scored senior Staci Hamaguchi.

That is all the Gaels would get as the Beavers rallied for three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and another two in the sixth to run away with the 7-1 decision.

Ta'Tyana McElroy (3-2) earned the victory for OSU. McElroy threw a complete game, allowing five hits and one run while striking out nine. Sophomore Kate Albaugh (0-2) recorded the loss after giving up 12 hits and five earned runs. Freshman Chelsea Loftis threw a one-hit inning in relief.

Williams led the Gaels at the plate with a 1-for-3 performance, adding an RBI. Hamaguchi also batted 1-for-3 with a run scored. Lauren Mello (1-for-3), Eleni Papailias (1-for-2) and Michelle Mathis (1-for-3) each tallied a hit for SMC.

In game two, OSU began the game with a three-run first and then tacked on two more in the third and three more in the fourth to earn the 8-0 victory and the sweep.

OSU hurler Brianne Ferguson improved to 26-4 on the year after holding SMC to one hit in five innings of work. Ferguson also struck out seven and walked none.

Kelly Harrison dropped to 1-6 on the year after allowing five runs and eight hits in three innings of work. Loftis gave up three runs on three hits in her second appearance of the day. Offensively, Mathis tallied the lone hit for the Gaels, finishing 1-for-2 in the game.

Saint Mary's will return to action when it hosts rival Santa Clara in Pacific Coast Softball action. The first of two doubleheaders will begin on Saturday, April 23 at noon from Cottrell Field.
