
Women's Basketball Rolls Past San Francisco

Moraga, CA - Three players scored in double figures as the Saint Mary's women's basketball team rolled past San Francisco 74-46 on Saturday afternoon at McKeon Pavilion. With the win the Gaels improve to 2-1 in West Coast Conference play and have beat the Dons five out of the last six games.
Evynn Van Burger led the Gaels with a game-high 15 points and added four assists and three rebounds. Sheridan Arredondo had 13 points and five rebounds and Jontelle Smith added 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Overall the Gaels improved to 7-9, while San Francisco fell to 1-2 in conference play and 5-11 overall.
Saint Mary's jumped in front of San Francisco early and never trailed in the game. The game was tied early, 4-4, but that would be as close as the Dons would get.
The Gaels built a 37-20 halftime lead, and led by as many as 28 several times, including the final score, which is the largest victory of the year.
As a team the Gaels shot 45.9 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from 3-point range and 72.2 percent from the free throw line. San Francisco was held to 24.2 percent shooting from the field and 14.3 percent from 3-point range.
Monica Mertle had seven points and six rebounds and Eghosa Obaiza had seven points off the bench.
San Francisco was led by Dominique Carter and Leeane Jensen, who each had 10 points.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Thursday, January 19 when it hosts Loyola Marymount at 7:05 p.m. The Gaels will then host Pepperdine on Saturday, January 21 at 2:05 p.m. Both games are at McKeon Pavilion.
