
Women Basketball's Late Rally Falls Short

San Diego, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team rallied late in the second half against San Diego, but came up short, as the Gaels lost 70-58 on Thursday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego.
The Gaels trailed 33-27 at halftime and cut the lead to 59-56 with just over two minutes remaining in the game, but the Toreros finished the game on an 11-2 run to pull away.
With the loss the Gaels fall to 3-3 in West Coast Conference action and 8-11 overall. San Diego improved to 2-4 in conference play and 7-12 overall.
Offensively the Gaels were led by Monica Mertle, who had 14 points in 33 minutes of action. Sheridan Arredondo added 11 points and nine rebounds and Serena Benavente had 10 points in 32 minutes.
As a team the Gaels shot 42.1 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point range, but committed 22 turnovers. San Diego shot 45.1 percent from the field and committed 19 turnovers.
The Toreros were led by Tiara Harris, who scored a career-high 27 points. Kaila Mangrum added 12 points and Sabine Loewe had 11.
Maija Lahde came off the bench for the Gaels to score eight points and grab five rebounds and Jontelle Smith had six points, including two 3-pointers.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Sunday, January 29 when it faces San Francisco at 7:05 p.m. at War Memorial Gymnasium. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Bay Area.
