
Three-Pointers Carry Women's Basketball Past San Francisco

San Francisco, CA - In a span of 41 seconds, the Saint Mary's women's basketball team turned their second consecutive road loss into their fourth West Coast Conference victory of the season, thanks to consecutive 3-pointers by Monica Mertle. Mertle's back-to-back 3-pointers helped propel the Gaels to a 68-63 victory over San Francisco on Sunday night at War Memorial Gymnasium.
The Gaels trailed 59-56 with 2:33 left in the game when Mertle knocked down the first 3-pointer to tie the game at 59-59. After a San Francisco turnover, Mertle then hit another 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Gaels a 62-59 lead with 1:52 remaining.
Saint Mary's would never surrender its lead. San Francisco made a run and cut the lead to 64-63, by a layup by Maija Lahde with nine second left sealed the victory.
With the win Saint Mary's improves to 4-3 in WCC action and 9-11 overall. San Francisco fell to 2-5 in conference play and 6-14 overall.
Mertle not only helped lead the comeback, but she also finished with a career-high 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting in 34 minutes of action.
Maija Lahde sparked the Gaels off the bench, scoring 13 points, including three 3-pointers and Sheridan Arredondo added 12 points.
As a team the Gaels shot 45.8 percent from the field, including 60 percent in the second half and 88.9 percent (16-18) from the free throw line. San Francisco shot 50 percent from the field, but went 1-of-9 from 3-point range.
The Dons were led by Dominique Carter, who scored 19 points and LaShaunte Stephens added 15 points.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Thursday, February 2 when it hosts Portland at 7:05 p.m. at McKeon Pavilion.
