
Women's Basketball Suffers Loss to Gonzaga

Spokane, WA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team suffered a tough 56-42 loss to the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon in Spokane, WA, dropping their first West Coast Conference game.
The Gaels split their first road trip during conference play, beating Portland on Friday night and losing to Gonzaga. The Gaels fell to 1-1 in conference and 6-9 overall. Gonzaga improved to 2-0 in conference and 7-10 overall.
Offensively the Gaels were led by Maija Lahde, who scored 10 points, all coming in the first half, and she added five rebounds.
Victoria Ramirez scored a career-high seven points and Evynn Van Burger scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds.
Sophomore Serena Benavente grabbed a career-high nine rebounds and added three points and four assists.
As a team the Gaels shot 36.2 percent from the field, but sent 4-for-19 from the free throw line and committed 26 turnovers. Gonzaga shot 32.8 percent from the field and committed 18 turnovers.
Gonzaga was led by Ashley Anderson, who scored a game-high 21 points and Stephanie Hawk added 13 points and eight rebounds.
In the first half, the Gaels were led by Lahde, who scored 10 points off the bench, including two 3-pointers. Evynn Van Burger and Victoria Ramirez each added four points in the opening 20 minutes. Gonzaga was led by Anderson, who had 13 points.
As a team the Gaels committed 14 turnovers and went 0-for-6 from the free throw line, but defensively they shut down the Bulldogs, holding them to 23.1 percent shooting from the field and 0-for-3 from 3-point range.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Saturday, January 14, when it hosts San Francisco at 2:05 p.m. at McKeon Pavilion.
