Women's Basketball Excites Crowd in Exhibition Loss

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team played an up-tempo and exciting exhibition game against Love and Basketball on Friday night, but ended up falling late in the second half 88-77 at McKeon Pavilion.
Saint Mary's new head coach Paul Thomas had the Gaels running up and down the court, which led to four players in double figures in scoring as Saint Mary's shot over 50-percent from the field and beyond the arc.
Sophomore Jontelle Smith led the offense with 14 points, while senior Sheridan Arredondo scored 13 points and added three rebounds.
Maija Lahde added 11 points and Monica Mertle had 10 points. Junior Mikaela Cowles came off the bench to spark the Gaels with seven points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Shaughnessy also led the up-tempo attack with five rebounds and two assists.
In the second half the Gaels turned up the offense, scoring 54 points on 51.5-percent shooting from the field and 50-percent shooting from beyond the arc.
Saint Mary's opens the regular season on Sunday, November 12 when it travels to Berkeley to face California at 2:05 p.m.
