Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's softball team earned its first victory of the season in game two of the doubleheader against San Jose State on Wednesday afternoon. Marlena Green earned her first collegiate victory in a 3-1 win over the Spartans. Saint Mary's dropped game one to SJSU 8-2. With the split, SMC improves to 1-7 on the season.
In game two, SMC was carried by freshman hurler Marlena Green, who went the distance to earn her first collegiate victory. Green threw five innings, allowing just one run on five hits and one strike out. Megan Galloway came in for the save, throwing two innings, striking out four and allowing just one hit.
Saint Mary's scored early, with two runs coming in the first inning. Bronwyn Russell nailed a line drive to second base and later scored on a single by catcher, Eleni Papailias. Lauren Mello who singled up the middle also scored on Papailias' base hit. Tied going into the bottom of the second, Russell singled to left field and scored on another single by freshman Sadie Dolcini. San Jose scored their only run of the game when Carlie Hill drew a walk and then scored on a single by Kristy Ballinger.
Bronwyn Russell led the way for the Gaels in game one, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Senior Eleni Papailias was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Dolcini went 1-for-2 with an RBI on the day. Lauren Mello and Chelsea Loftis were both 1-for-3 respectively.
In game one, the Gaels fell to the Spartans 8-2. Lauren Gardner was tagged with the loss for the Gaels, throwing 4.1 innings, giving up five runs on six hits. Sophomore, Chelsea Loftis came in for 2.2 innings of relief, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out one. Lauren Mello led the Gaels, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Dolcini and Mathis tacked on the other two hits for SMC.
Saint Mary's will return to the diamond Thursday, February 16 when they face the Drake Bulldogs in a non-conference game. The first pitch is slated for 3 pm from Cottrell Field.
