Women's Basketball Suffers Heartbreaking Loss to Santa Clara

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team outscored Santa Clara by 11 points in the second half, but it wasn't enough, as the Broncos held on for a 64-62 victory over the Gaels on Wednesday night at McKeon Pavilion.
The Gaels fell behind by 13 at the break, but outscored the Broncos 37-26 in the second half and nearly pulled off the comeback. With the loss the Gaels fall to 5-6 in West Coast Conference play and 10-14 overall. Santa Clara remains in first place and improved to 9-2 in conference and 15-9 overall.
Saint Mary's was led by Maija Lahde, who scored 14 points and added a career-high 15 rebounds. Wednesday's double-double is Lahde's second straight accomplishment, both against Santa Clara. Lahde recorded the double-double in front of her parents and brother who are in town visiting from Finland.
The Gaels had four players score in double figures, including Lahde. Serena Benavente had 11 points and three assists, and Jontelle Smith and Sheridan Arredondo each added 10 points. Evynn Van Burger had nine points and six rebounds and Monica Mertle added seven points.
As a team the Gaels outrebounded Santa Clara 42-33 and shot 43.1 percent from the field. The Gaels shot 3-of-15 from 3-point range, while the Broncos went 10-of-23 from beyond the arc.
Santa Clara was led by Kayla Huss, who scored a game-high 16 points. Michelle Cozad had 14 points and Kasey Monteith added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Saint Mary's concludes its home schedule on Friday, February 17 at 7:05 p.m. against San Diego. The Gaels will honor three seniors on the roster on Friday night, Erika Urmonaite, Katie Ludwick and Evynn Van Burger, who will be playing in their final home game.
