
Women's Basketball Pulls Out Thriller Against San Diego

Moraga, CA - On senior night at McKeon Pavilion, the Gaels were led by two sophomores and a freshman, who all scored in double figures and led the Gaels to a 63-58 victory over San Diego on Friday night. With the win the Gaels snap their three-game losing streak.
Freshman Jontelle Smith led the Gaels with 13 points and sophomores Maija Lahde and Monica Mertle each had 11 points as the Gaels improved to 6-6 in West Coast Conference play and 11-14 overall. San Diego fell to 3-9 in conference and 8-17 overall.
After trailing the first 15 minutes of the second half, the Gaels finally took the lead for good after a Serena Benavente jumper gave Saint Mary's a 51-50 lead with 5:44 left in the game.
Down the stretch Smith, Lahde and Mertle all hit clutch baskets to hold off the Toreros, who fought the entire game and never went away.
San Diego was led by Tiara Harris, who scored a game-high 22 points and Kelly Winther added 11 points. Sabine Loewe grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with five points.
As a team the Gaels shot 50 percent from the field, including 58.3 percent in the second half. Saint Mary's on the defensive end of the floor did a great job holding San Diego to 33.3 percent shooting from the field.
Saint Mary's returns to action on Thursday, February 23, when it travel to Pepperdine to face the Waves at 7:05 p.m. at the Firestone Fieldhouse.
