Women's Basketball Drops Road Game to Pepperdine

Malibu, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team scored 49 points in the second half, including 10 3-pointers, but it wasn't enough as a slow start hurt the Gaels in a 69-64 road loss to Pepperdine on Thursday night in Malibu, CA.
The Gaels scored 15 points in the opening half, shooting 28.6 percent from the field, but in the second half, Saint Mary's shot 61.5 percent from the field and was 10-of-13 from beyond the arc.
With the loss the Gaels drop to 11-15 overall and 6-7 in conference play. Pepperdine remains one spot ahead of the Gaels in fourth place with an 8-5 conference record and an 11-15 overall mark.
The Gaels will wrap up regular season play on Saturday, February 25 when they face Loyola Marymount at 2:05 p.m. at Gersten Pavilion in Los Angeles.
Offensively the Gaels were led by sophomore Monica Mertle, who had 18 points, including four 3-pointers.
Senior Evynn Van Burger and freshman Jontelle Smith each added 11 points and Maija Lahde had 10 points and five rebounds. Sheridan Arredondo recorded 11 rebounds and added six points in the loss.
As a team the Gaels finished the game shooting 46.8 percent from the field and 55 percent from 3-point range. Saint Mary's committed 22 turnovers, compared to Pepperdine's 15.
Pepperdine was led offensively by Shannon Johnson, who had 13 points, Daphanie Kennedy added 12 points and Kelsey Ball had 11.
