Women's Basketball Suffers Home Loss to Gonzaga

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team suffered a 68-58 home loss to Gonzaga on Saturday afternoon at McKeon Pavilion. The Gaels led late in the first half, but the Bulldogs overtook the Gaels right before the break and never gave up the lead in the second half.

With the loss the Gaels fall to 5-4 in West Coast Conference play and 10-12 overall. Gonzaga moved into third place in the conference as they improved to 6-3 in WCC action and 11-13 overall.

Offensively, Jontelle Smith once again led the Gaels with 13 points and added four rebounds in 35 minutes of action. Smith was coming off a career-high 25 points on Thursday night.

Senior Evynn Van Burger added 10 points and three rebounds in 21 minutes of action and Sheridan Arredondo had nine points and two blocked shots. Serena Benavente and Monica Mertle each added eight points.

Gonzaga was led by Stephanie Hawk, who scored a game-high 21 points and added seven rebounds. Ashley Anderson had 15 points and Juliann Laney added10 points.

As a team the Gaels shot 38.8 percent from the field and 25 percent from 3-point range. Gonzaga shot 46.9 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from beyond the arc.

In the first half the Gaels were led by Smith, Benavente and Eghosa Obaiza, who each had six points. Saint Mary's trailed 37-33, despite Gonzaga shooting 52 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range.

The Gaels return to action on Thursday, February 9 when they travel to Santa Clara to face the Broncos at 7:05 p.m. at the Leavey Center.
