
Men's Basketball Falls to Gonzaga on the Road 60-49

Spokane, WA - Derek Raivio and Matt Bouldin each scored 12 points as Gonzaga defeated Saint Mary's 60-49 Saturday from the McCarthey Athletic Center. With the win, Gonzaga remains tied atop the West Coast Conference.
Gonzaga (18-8, 8-2 WCC) extended its home court win streak to 50 games, hitting 25-of-54 from the floor, while Saint Mary's (13-13, 5-5) shot 20-of-47.
Jeremy Pargo had 11 points for the Zags.
Gonzaga threw a pressing defense at the Gaels, who went scoreless for long chunks of time. The Gaels were held without a basket for the first five minutes of the game, and the first four minutes of the second half.
Ian O'Leary led Gaels scoring with 11 points and added six rebounds and Omar Samhan came off the bench to add 10 points and led all rebounders with eight.
Saint Mary's leading scorer and rebounder, Diamon Simpson was held to seven points and four rebounds, about half of his 14.6 point and 7.4 rebounds average.
The Gaels started slowly against the determined Zags' swarming defense, which forced 11 first-half Gaels turnovers and 17 overall. Gonzaga led 21-8 with 7:45 remaining in the half, but the Gaels went on an 8-0 run, including six points by Samhan, and trailed just 25-23 at the half.
After the Gaels evened the score at 25-25 on two free throws by Brett Collins to open the second half. Collins finished the game with five points in 27 minutes. Gonzaga went on an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 33-25 lead. Saint Mary's would get as close as 44-41 following a jumper by Tron Smith at the seven-minute mark. The Zags would extend its lead to double digits (53-43) on a Matt Bouldin trey with 3:51 left to play and Pargo put an exclamation point on the game with a crowd pleasing dunk with 53 second left.Saint Mary's will return to WCC action on Monday night when the Gaels complete the road trip at Portland. Tip-off is slated for 7:05 p.m. at the Chiles Center in Portland, OR.
