Gaels defeat No. 73 UC Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara, CA - The Saint Mary's women's tennis team pulled off a 5-2 win over UC Santa Barbara today. After the Gaels won the home opener last weekend, they won their first road match today to bring their record to 2-0.

The Gaels started the match off on the right foot winning the doubles matches. Femke Strijbis and Nienke Strijbis blew by their competition winning the match 8-2. Femke and Nienke remain undefeated in doubles play this season, moving to an impressive 5-0. Marah Calvo and Erin Young sealed the deal for the Gaels winning their match 8-3. Calvo and Young are finding quiet the niche. The two have won both their matches as a doubles team.

In singles play, the Gaels were led by senior Aude Lambert. Lambert looked good today winning her match in two sets 6-4, 6-1. Jessica Hoath followed suit winning her match in two sets 7-5, 6-4.

Nienke Strijbis provided the coup de grace for UC Santa Barbara. The freshman won her first set 6-4 but lost the second 4-6. With the Gaels holding onto a 3-2 lead, Nienke responded by winning the next set 6-1 and giving the Gaels a 4-2 lead to seal the match.

Marah Calvo won in a tie-breaker after winning the first set 6-4 and dropping the second set 3-6. Calvo won the tie-breaker 10-5 to give the Gaels their 5-2 win.
