Stockton, CA - The Saint Mary's softball team split their double-header Sunday, against the Pacific Tigers on the opening day of the 2008 season (W, 10-8; L, 6-1). In the Gaels second game of the day senior Megan Galloway and junior Sadie Dolcini each slammed their first homerun of the season. Saint Mary's freshman pitcher, Maryanne Cronin had an impressive debut in the circle, only giving up four runs in seven innings between action in both games.
The Gaels' second game was an offensive battle, with Saint Mary's coming out on top, 10-8. Saint Mary's scored in the first inning of the game, when Lauren Clark drew a bases loaded walk scoring Bronwyn Russell. The Tigers responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game at one apiece.
Saint Mary's rallied for three runs in the second, as Eisenbeis, Bergeson, and Ruezga all scored. Eisenbeis scored on Russell's sacrifice fly, Bergeson crossed home on Ruezga's single to left field, and the last run of the inning was Ruezga's on a Dolcini double.
The Gaels lead quickly evaporated in the third inning, as Pacific answered back with four runs of their own, to take a 5-4 lead.
After an inning of scoreless softball, Dolcini clubbed the Gaels first homer of the season to tie it up 5-5 in the fifth inning.
The Gaels bats proved clutch in the top of the seventh inning, as Saint Mary's exploded for five runs, highlighted by Kat Delpit's go ahead two run single. Galloway's three run homer provided the insurance the Gaels ended up needing, as the Tigers countered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh inning before making their last out of the game on a groundout to Gaels shortstop Lauren Clark.
Molly Bergeson started the game for the Gaels and pitched two innings allowing five runs, four of which were earned. Maryanne Cronin relieved Bergeson in the third inning, and finished out the game strong, allowing only three runs, all earned, in five innings to finish out the game, and earn her first collegiate win.
Pacific sophomore Kellee Wilson was responsible for all the damage done in the bottom of the third, as she belted her second grand slam of the day. Junior Casey Goldsand had two runs batted in on the day, both coming on a single in the bottom of the seventh.
In game one against the Tigers the Gaels were unable to recover after Pacific's Kellee Wilson hit a grand slam in the first inning. Pacific's junior pitcher Chelsea Engle limited the Gaels to four hits throughout the game, while striking out 13 batters. Megan Galloway took the loss for the Gaels, as she gave up four earned runs in three innings.
Saint Mary's continues the season against the Stanford Cardinal on Wednesday, February 13, with the first pitch schedule for 6:00 pm.
